Welcome to our website

Greenbank is an 11 - 16 girls' comprehensive school of just over 1000 pupils, sited in extensive grounds adjoining Royal Birkdale and Hillside Golf Clubs. We became a Language College in 1997 which means we are given extra funding to support the teaching of languages and the international dimension of our work throughout the curriculum.
Please look at the extra curricular section which shows the variety of opportunity on offer - pupils excel at sporting activities and have the benefit of a floodlit multi purpose sports pitch. A long awaited sports hall is under construction. Drama, music and the arts flourish as well as the very popular Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Pupils raise vast amounts of money for charity - recently over £2,500 was raised for leukaemia in just over two months.

We are constantly improving the facilities for the pupils. Two science laboratories have been refurbished over the last two years and a third has been completed last summer. Some 45 lap tops supplement the four ICT areas and there are five interactive white boards in use.

In order to help pupils fully participate in opportunities throughout the world, we aim to give them as many different experiences as possible so they can grasp whatever challenges are put before them. For example:

Visiting teachers from China are a regular part of school life. We have had a teacher from Hungary with us this year and one from Poland will be joining us in the Autumn.

Evening classes in French, Spanish, Chinese, Hungarian, Italian and Arabic have taken place this year involving many people from the local community.

We have a purpose built foreign street/market place area so our pupils and those from other schools can learn languages in authentic surroundings.

Pupils take part in study visits: for example, to Paris for Business Studies and Travel & Tourism, to Spain and France for language practice and to Austria to ski.

These exciting opportunities blend with the full National Curriculum - see the Curriculum section for further details. We aim for the highest standards in all we do: in 2001, 69% of pupils gained 5 or more GCSE subjects, in 2002 64%.
